A simple, but very helpful way to calculate gas mileage is to begin by filling up the gas tank fully. Once the tank is full, reset your trip odometer and drive your vehicle until the tank is close to empty. Provided you know exactly how large your gas tank is, fill up at a gas station until your tank is absolutely full again. Now, calculating gas mileage is all a matter of jotting down the total number of miles driven divided by total number of gallons of gas you just put in your tank.
