Why We Need to Reduce Diesel Emissions

Diesel exhaust is a combination of numerous gases and particulate matter, such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides and more. Diesel particulate matter is composed of oils and unburnt fuel, as well as cancer causing hydrocarbons known as “PAHs, or “polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to be more precise.

In the past ten years, various studies conducted by numerous organizations focusing on human and animal health problems caused as a direct result of exposure to diesel exhausts have shown significant cause for the need to implement exhaust reducing technologies.

Cancer is not the only health concern from diesel exhaust, either. Not only does it smell bad, it is an irritant to the eyes, nose and throat. It also causes shortness of breath, induces coughing, build up of phlegm, tightness of the chest and wheezing. Other studies have shown that diesel exhaust increases the risk of chronic bronchitis and asthma is those exposed to diesel exhaust in the workplace. A good example of this is miners using diesel operated mining equipment. The closely confined and poorly ventilated workspace combines to create a serious health risk. Due to this risk, many companies are now retrofitting diesel powered mining equipment to reduce harmful diesel emissions and ensure the safety of workers.

Reducing these harmful emissions creates a cleaner workspace and eliminates health risks created by those harmful emissions, keeping your workers in good health.

Reducing diesel emissions is not only good for the environment, but also for everyone globally. By reducing harmful diesel exhaust with the proper technologies such as Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOCs) and Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs), harmful emissions can be virtually eliminated.
