Barbie Collector Dolls Are Great Investment

Friday, June 27th, 2008

I stumbled on the world of Barbie collector dolls by mistake. I was not the type of person who traded things, and I never thought of myself as much of a collector. I really wasn’t even aware that I had a collection of Barbie collector dolls that would have made many women in this country green with envy. Nonetheless, it was the truth I had dozens and dozens of dolls in my room that I had been keeping ever since I was very little. Some of them were very commonplace, but other ones were pretty rare. I had Barbies that were styled after various 80s pop singers, for example, that were almost impossible to find. I even had a few bootleg Barbie dolls…

Collecting Trade Dollars Britannia

Friday, May 16th, 2008

It’s no secret that mint condition trade dollars Britannia are worth a lot more than ones in fair or poor condition. A damaged coin is much less attractive to a buyer than one which is without blemishes, which can command a substantial premium. More factors than just age determine the value of a coin to collectors. In the estimation of a collector, many factors besides just age and rarity go into deciding upon a coin’s market value. Coins can be valued by many factors, the most important of which is, of course demand.

The most prized trade dollars in your collection should be stored in an excellent holder that safeguards against fingerprints, dust, and even moisture. There are other protectors in the market that can do a better job and guard against moisture than the typical stapled or taped packets, which don’t provide the maximum protection. Avoid any storage space that is damp and cool when selecting a storage area for your collectible coins.

Cleaning coins is not a good idea, and if it must be done, the process should be entrusted to an expert. The patina on an old coin might best be left undisturbed, since removing it could decrease the coin’s value as a collectible.

Shopping Tips For Collectible Antique Art Deco Rings

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

With classical style Art Deco rings, reflect both the vintage and the modern. When one sees an Art Deco era piece, one is most struck by the use of colors and geometric shapes. Do you love those clean and elegant lines along with stepped designs and repeating patterns? Look no more, Art Deco is your style.

Art Deco has never been out of style since it first made its presence felt in our homes in the 1920s but many vintage Art Deco rings are in bad condition so don’t forget to inspect the condition of the piece before buying it.

If you want the best quality ring at an affordable price try looking for Art Deco vintage pieces. Make sure to purchase your ring in the best condition you can afford, as any flaw can degrade the overall value of the collectible.

Art Deco is the king of style. It can be recognized by its geometric patterns and repeating details. Remember, when you buy Art Deco rings, it’s all about price, quality and style. If you want to increase the value of your collectibles, make sure that the piece is both stylish and at a price you can afford.

Fire Trucks

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

Though seeing a fire truck racing down the road with it’s lights on and horn blaring is never a good omen, children cannot help but be fascinated. Even when my daughter hears the sirens she immediately announces that there is a fire truck on the way. She already knows from experience that when you see one behind you coming swiftly down the road that you should pull over to let them pass. Perhaps the idea of a fire truck is something that will always caught the imagination of a child, and maybe that has something to do with the fact that they know if something goes wrong, there are people out there who will come to the rescue. It would be fun to be one of those truck drivers.

Antique Jewelry

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

In the search for something special or unusual people are buying any antique jewelry that comes on the market. Some people are confused about what antique jewelry actually is.
The definition of the periods jewelry is from are considered to be the antique period which is jewelry that is over 100 years old, whereas Vintage jewelry is jewelry that comes after the 1920s.

There are several other periods within the antique period. The Late Georgian, the Victorian and the Art Nouveau cover all the periods when jewelry can be considered Antique and anything that comes after those periods would be considered vintage rather than antique.

You need to be very sure of what you are looking at before you purchase it. There are lots of copies around and you would be wise to have any potential purchase examined by an antique jewelry expert.

Collecting Susan B Anthony Dollars

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

If you’re starting to collect Susan B Anthony dollars, know that the value of a coin directly reflects its condition. Any coin which is damaged, marked, scratched, or scuffed will usually suffer a serious reduction in value compared to a coin in finer form. Also, be aware that a coin’s worth depends on more than just its age. In the estimation of a collector, many factors besides just age and rarity go into deciding upon a coin’s market value. Market value is as much a determination of demand as any other factor.

It‘s best to avoid handling coins if you can. Scratched, dirty, or coins marred from handling have less value than those in mint condition. Direct contact with your collection should be avoided, especially with coins in mint condition, but if you have to touch please do so by only holding the outer edge.

Cleaning coins is not recommended and should be done only by an expert, and only when absolutely necessary. The patina on an old coin might best be left undisturbed, since removing it could decrease the coin’s value as a collectible.

Most holders provide adequate protection for Susan B Anthony dollar but you will want to be sure that your most valuable coins are protected not only from fingerprints and dust, but also moisture. Although the usual stapled or taped packets don’t provide optimum protection, there are other containers out there that also block moisture. Never keep your collectible coins in a damp, dark, cool area such as the cellar; instead, choose somewhere dry and with a steady temperature.

Investing In Franklin Half Dollars

Saturday, April 12th, 2008

If you’re investing in Franklin half dollars, remember that the coin’s condition is of utmost importance. Most collectors are willing to pay much more for a coin which is flawless, and they will seek a heavy discount if the coin is in a tatty state. Collectors should consider more than just a coin’s age to determine its value. As a general rule, the older and rarer a coin is, the more valuable it will be; but did you know that other situational factors play a role, too?. When thinking about market value for a particular coin, always try to assess the demand.

It is usually not a good idea to clean coins, so if it has to be done, the process should be entrusted to an expert. Since collectors might seek coins with the patina of time, cleaning a coin could make it less valuable.

Whenever possible avoid handling your coins. When collectible coins are handled you run the risk of them being nicked, scratched, or dirty and their value is lessened. Any type of touch or fingerprint could lessen the value of your coins, so only grasp them by the edges when absolutely necessary.

Ancient Oil Lamp

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Article excerpt for Ancient Oil Lamp provided by Fly Article

You see, I used to sit with my grandfather near an ancient oil lamp. It was one of those antique lamps that is in families for generations. It must have been well over a hundred years old, but it looked almost new. He would always burnish the silver of the lamp base, clean the oil lamp chimney, and change the wick whenever it needed it. It was always filled with lamp oil, and it made a clear, bright light.

Postage Stamp

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

Whenever you put something in the mail, you know you have to have a postage stamp attached. I recently sent a stack of letters to the post office with my husband, and asked him to put them in the mail for me. Though there are some post offices that will run a stack of letters through a machine for you, the clerk simply handed him a pile of stamps and he had to affix them himself. Some of the letters were going overseas, and I pointed them out to him. These letters need to have a different postage stamp than the others. However, apparently I overlooked one because a letter was just returned to me today.

When it went down to get my mail, I noticed that one of my letters had been returned, and I didnít understand why. I looked at the postage stamp and saw that it had been canceled, but there was a small note on the letter saying it was returned because of postage. I looked at who the letter was addressed to, and I noticed that it was a friend in England. This was the letter I forgot to tell my husband about, and he forgot to get the proper postage stamp to send it to England. This was my fault though, as I am guessing he did not know the difference.

Now I wonder what I should do. Because the postage stamp was canceled, I wonder if I will have to pay the postage all over again. I realized that there was not enough on there, but will I have to pay for the stamp all over again? I guess the only way to find out is to go back to the post office and ask. I would hope that I could just buy a postage stamp to pay the difference, but I have no idea what is going to happen when I get there.

I guess buying a new postage stamp will not break me. I know they donít cost very much, but perhaps it is just the principle of the thing. I wish they had not canceled the stamp so that I could have used it. I know postage does not cost a lot, but when you added up, it can cost a lot to mail things when you have friends around the world. I guess from now on when I have things I must mail to people on the other side of the world I should just make sure I go to the post office myself to make sure the correct postage stamp is put on each letter.

Cherub Figurines Make Thoughtful Gifts for Those of Any Religion

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

We’ve all seen them; those beautiful, mischievous, chubby-cheeked angels that adorn romantic cards, baby nurseries and gift store shelves. But many people only associate these cute little angels as current day symbols of love and comfort when in fact, cherubs have a long and interesting past that have their origins in many religions.

Cherubs, also known as seraphim, were originally depicted in Zoroastrian, and later Hebrew and Christian religious texts, as four-sided, four-faced winged creatures that guard the throne of God, the entrance to the lost Garden of Eden, and the covenant of the Ark. Later Christians differentiated cherubs and seraphim, with cherubs being the second highest order of angels, after the first-order seraphim. In both Christian and Islam religions, the cherubim (karibiyun in Islam) live in heaven and continually praise God (or Allah).

In fact, it wasn’t until the Renaissance period that westernized Christianity began to change the image of the cherub into the one we know now. In fact, the cherub that we encounter today, with its sweet looking, child-like face and wings, better describe another form of angel found in the Hebrew tradition, the ‘putti,’ another form of angel entirely.

But whatever the origin, cherubs today are associated with attributes of God, such as love, divine thought and happiness. As angels, they are looked upon by many as providing divine protection and guidance to loved ones on earth. It is these meanings that make cherub figurines such a loving and wonderful gift for those celebrating the birth of their child. While it seems unusual for a gift that celebrates birth to be equally as good as a symbol to comfort bereavement and loss, it is their representation of God’s love and protection that makes them so.

Often for those grieving in bereavement, adding angel and other cherub figurines to their home environment help them to remember and focus upon God’s love and immortality, and his eternal promise of being reunited with their loved one in heaven in time to come. Even bereaved without any religious belief or affiliation can be comforted by depictions and figures of angels and cherubs, as in popular secular culture they have come to represent love and goodness. These angels can be a form of support that you can provide to them for when you cannot be there.

Whatever the religion, whatever the spiritual need, angels such as cherubs can be wonderful symbols of your love and support. Best yet, there can never be too many angels to watch over your loved one. A gift of an angel, such as cherub figurine, or an angel pin will be a welcome show of your love and support for those you love.

Uncovering Myths about Angels: How Your Favorite Angel Figurines Came to Be

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Angel figurines are popular items. Collectors fill their homes with shelves of ceramic and wooden angels, pictures are hung over the doorways that read, “This house is protected by Angels!” and key chains are given as gifts that plead, “Never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly!” The angel craze is growing, but every student of the Bible is aware that those angelic images of beautiful, peaceful women in flowing robes with snowy-white wings, are not quite true to life.

There are many myths about angels that have been accepted as truths in the world today.

1. Angels are not people who have died. Angels are created beings, just like us. We do not earn wings and a halo for our good behavior when we die.

2. Not all angels are good. Lucifer convinced one third of all the angels in heaven to revolt against God with him. These angels chose to follow Lucifer rather than God. These unholy angels are now called demons, but they are still fallen angels.

3. There are no baby angels. Angels do not marry nor do they have children with other angels.

4. Angels cannot die. God created them as immortal beings.

5. Angels are not all-knowing. They do the bidding of the Father. The Bible proclaims that no man knows the day or the hour of the end of the Earth except the Father in heaven, not even the angels of heaven.

6. There are no female angels. Because angels are described as having beautiful features and are clothed in flowing white garments, they may be mistaken for women, (thus the popularity of beautiful women angel figurines) but the Bible has no mention of a single female angel in heaven.

7. Angels hold a lower status than humans in the heavenly hierarchy. Human saints will judge all angels .Man was created lower than angels, but he will sit in judgment of them at the end of time.

8. Hell was never created for man. God created Hell as a place of confinement for Lucifer and his followers. God’s intention was that no man perishes, but all would come to Him.

9. Angels and demons cannot separate us from God by force. If we are far from God, it is a matter of free will.

10. Angels do not have halos, but their countenance may seem to glow from being in the presence of God.

11. Angels do not always have wings. Although they are created with wings, they are spiritual beings who can take on many different forms when needed, even disguising themselves as men.

12. Angels do not sit on clouds and play harps all day. They are God’s messengers and do His work. They comfort, protect and watch over humans. They praise God incessantly. They are strong warriors, able to wipe out an entire civilization when so instructed. They fight against fallen angels in spiritual battle day and night, without ceasing. They carry the souls of the dead saints to heaven.

13. Angels are not unorganized masses of beings that do whatever they please all day. They are arranged into a type of military ranking and give and receive orders.

14. Man is warned not to worship angels. Worship and adoration are reserved for God alone.

15. Man’s greatest battle is not against other men, but against the evil spirits or fallen angels.

Traditional angel figurines may not be historically accurate depictions of these messengers of God, but for many, they serve as a reminder that forces unseen are at work around us and that God is in control of the universe, making them popular symbols of comfort and faith.

African American angel figurines

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

My church recently had a program honoring African American heritage. After the program there were tables set up in the foyer that had displays of books, tapes, CDs, paintings, framed artwork, and more. I looked on one table and saw it had all types of figurines but the ones that caught my eye were the African American angel figurines.

They were all so unique and beautiful. I tried to think if I knew anyone who collected angel figurines that would like one of these beautiful pieces. The ones I saw had an emotion about them. They truly brought out the peace and tranquility you would expect an angel to have. The faces had great detail and I found them very soothing. There is no better gift to give a person than the gift of peace and calm.

I remember after my father passed away, I would have given anything for the peace I had experienced that day. What a great way to honor someone’s memory or to remember the joy you had with that person than by having an angel that reminds you of them.

African American angel figurines have a way of bringing out rare beauty and combining it with the spiritual wholeness that angels are known to bring. Do you know anyone who collects angels? If so, African American angel figurines would be a tremendous addition to their collection. They are spiritual pieces that seem to tell a story all their own.

Some of them represent protection. These are great gifts for someone having a new baby, someone getting married, or even a person who is grieving. You could also get one for a child’s room.

There are figurines that can be used as night lights and ones that represent different family members. You can buy a mother, sister or daughter angel to give to your family member as a cherished keepsake.

The Internet has made it even easier to find a good selection of figurines to chose from. With just a click, you can have a wealth of information about these collectibles at your disposal.

Angels mean different things for different people. So, pick out the one that best suits the person of whom you are buying. Think about adding a poem, note or a special card to your gift to help create a lasting memory of a treasured present.

Your Name Here: Novelty Salt and Pepper Shakers

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

Some household items just seem to lend themselves to being turned into art objects. You can put a design on a towel or a sheet, but the nature of the thing itself is not altered. Not so the humble salt and pepper shaker set.

I could not even guess how many mornings could have been changed for the better if, instead of plain glass or plastic shakers, my addled mind had been jarred to a more pleasurable level of consciousness by the sight of my scrambled eggs being a-salted by the holes in the head of a cartoonish pig. Maybe I could have made something of myself, maybe someone less caffeinated and more motivated.

Now, before going any further, I must make one confession. The discriminating reader will have no doubt noticed that I made no mention of peppering my eggs from the holes in the head of a cartoonish pig. Like any good patriotic American, I put pepper on my eggs. However, I am strictly a fresh ground man. But of course, the novelty salt and pepper shaker is not about salt and pepper at all. In fact, utilitarianism is so far down the list of considerations that it really does not enter the equation at all.

The interesting thing about the novelty salt and pepper shaker set is that almost all of us have one. Uncle Fred and Aunt Ethel go to the Alamo on vacation and need to bring back a gift. Simple as that. The shaker set has jumped genres from condiment delivery system to knick knack. For most of us, that is about the extent of it.

However, at the other end of the spectrum is the collector. Like any novelty item, the shaker set has its own niche constituency, or, to put it in the vernacular, cult. As I see it, shaker collectors can break down along two different lines. In one, the shaker is a subset of an overall theme. Let’s say you are into dogs. You collect dog knick knacks of all kinds, including the salt and pepper shaker. Also, anyone into seasonal themes would fall under this rubric. The other species of collector is the one who is concerned with the specific item itself. Some people collect stamps, Elvis collects Cadillacs, and others collect salt and pepper shakers. Some people like any and all, some like tacky, some like wood. It seems that there is a shaker out there to fit any and all desires.

Salt and pepper shakers can be found on virtually every dinner table and kitchen counter. Perhaps it is this very ubiquity that makes it so appealing as pop art. The way you can tell a lot about a person by the clothes he wears or the car he drives, our chosen salt and pepper shakers say something about who we are. Now that I think of it, your favorite car has probably already been immortalized in shaker form.

Barbie Dream House

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

The dream and the desire to have something that everyone else has is much stronger than the actual will to play with it once the item has come home. It’s a lot like anything else. Sometimes the chase is more exciting than the end result.

Her Barbie Dream House was a lot of fun, but I think I would have lost interest in it rather quickly. Though I can’t really say that I had a very short attention span, I did prefer to play outside. I would have loved to have it, but I suspect it would have gone unused for long periods of time. In fact, I have a suspicion that my younger brother might have gotten more use out of it than I did. I preferred to be outdoors, and the Barbie Dream House is not really something you want to haul in and out of the house to play with each day.

Barbie and Ken

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

When my mother moved out of the farm house into an apartment for the elderly we had the task of going through the five bedroom home to divide up things that we wanted and to get the other things ready for selling. In the attic we came across a large box that was filled with all of our Barbie accessories. There were several Barbie and Ken dolls as well as the hand sewn clothing. My daughter and my sister’s daughter were helping us go through things. When they saw the Barbie things they could not believe that they had not played with them as children. Some of the gowns that my mother had made were truly beautiful. I did not appreciate all the work and details that she had put into the outfits when I was a little girl.

Bumper Sticker

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

I know that it is pretty silly to try to express myself with my car. After all, people will at most make some broad observations that just can’t compare to the complexity of a real person. Nevertheless, I am a sucker for bumper stickers. I love clever bumper sticker sayings. Whether they are political, cultural, or just plain out and out funny, I love bumper stickers, window decals, and other similar decorations for the car.
