Would You Like To Become a Chef

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

There are many reasons why different people chose a particular career. So what criteria should there be if you want to become a chef? Well, almost anyone with a passion for food and a fantastic work ethic can meet the requirements to become a chef. Although there are some credentials you have to have, they are not that stringent. All you need is a food handlers card, a high school education, and you can begin your culinary school training. That, however, is where the work begins.
You see, I have seen a lot of people try to become a chef for a variety of different reasons. Some people do it because they think they will make a lot of money. Not surprisingly almost all of these folks burn out pretty quickly. Some people do it because of a love of food, but are unable to work under the pressure of the kitchen. These folks do not do very well either. If you want to become a chef, you have to combine a passion for food, an ability to work well with others, an uncanny level of skill at keeping cool under pressure, and a willingness to initially work very hard for very little money.
Don’t get me wrong about not making much money because the top chefs do make a killing.

Quick and Easy Soup Recipes

Monday, November 17th, 2008

I didn’t want to spend any money on these preliminary cooking adventures, so I decided to check online to see what kind of easy soup recipes I could find for free. As I hoped, my search generated more results than I knew what to do with. This allowed me to just pick a few websites that were simple to navigate, and begin trying out whichever soups sounded easiest to make. Most of the easy soup recipes I found online called for only a handful of ingredients, which was perfect for a beginner like myself. After all, it’s hard to screw something up when you’re only combining four or five ingredients in a single pot!

Another great thing about the quick and easy soup recipes I’ve tried is the fact that most of the ingredients are cheap. Most of the soups I’ve made can be prepared (in significant quantities) for about five dollars or less. This is fantastic for families looking to stretch their budget as much as possible.

I’m happy to say that…

Casserole Recipes For Quick Meals

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

It is no surprise then that the casserole, as a meal-in-a-pot, has been around since ancient times. It was the French, in the 19th century, who gave us the name, casserole (cocotte) which identified the container rather than specific contents. In general, a casserole is any large, deep oven proof container in which the ingredients, usually vegetables, cooked meats and fish are mixed or layered, with a base of pasta or rice in a sauce. In modern times, even though they might be known by a number different of names, casserole recipes are found in nearly every cuisine around the world.
There are thousands of combinations to be made from such ingredients. Casserole recipes abound, online and in cookbooks. The best thing about this is that with a bit of practice, you can make your own casserole recipes, using your very own favorite ingredients in combinations pleasing to your family. The contents take ingredients from nearly all the food groups and make a substantial, nutritious and satisfying meal. Served with a dinner salad and a chunk of bread, even a teen’s voracious appetite and taste buds are made happy by the end of the meal.

How To Make An Apron For Gift

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

When designing the handicraft gift, you can be as creative as you like with pockets.  Every apron is more useful with pockets.  A person who cleans houses, for instance, can use pockets for odds and ends they pick up as well as for their spray bottles, sponges, and scrub brushes.

To make the apron, fold the piece of fabric lengthwise.  This will allow you to cut the shape with one cut, making the two sides symmetrical.   What you will be shaping when you make the cut will be the bib section of the apron.  The bib for an adult sized apron will need to be about 9 inches wide.  Measure from the fold about 5-1/2 inches.  This is half the width of the bib plus an inch to fold under twice to form a hem.  The piece you will cut off the side to shape the bib will be a half bullet shape with the tip of the bullet being where the ties will be attached.  The length of the half bullet shape should be about a foot, and the width will be from the spot you marked 5-1/2 inches from the fold to the outside edge of the fabric.  When these pieces are cut off, the result should be an apron shaped piece of fabric.

Online Recipes Will Reveal The Secrets

Monday, September 1st, 2008

Let’s say the dish that won your heart is a Cajun Gumbo which you had the pleasure of tasting in New Orleans. Gumbo is a dish with an unmistakable flavor, but you cannot figure out what it is that makes it unique. Be an online recipe detective. Search on ‘gumbo broth technique’. Here’s where you find the secrets! The unique taste of gumbo is due to the technique of the roux, or broth base, and the celery-onion-pepper combination.

Here you learn that the roux is made by combining equal parts of flour and oil and cooking it slowly for at least 20 minutes until it achieves a mahogany color. Add the so-called ‘Holy Trinity’ of veggies to the roux and stir. Add chicken or seafood broth and your meats or seafood. This is the essence of gumbo. Thyme, gumbo file (powdered sassafras), and cayenne are the must-have seasonings.

Whatever the dish you seek, online recipes will reveal the secrets. All you need to do is look!

Homemade New England Clambakes

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

The origin of the clambake started in Plymouth, Massachusetts where settlers witness the Native Americans cooking seafood over seaweeds and hot stones. The method of cooking is now called the popular New England clambake which is not only a tradition in the specific area but has also become popular all over the country. Thanks to the Internet, you can now order Maine live lobster for your Lobster clambake anytime, anywhere.

The main stars of the clambake are of course, the lobsters. They come in many sizes - the smallest kinds which weigh around 1 - 1.25 pounds are called the chickens, 1.25-pound lobsters are called Quarter, and 1.20-pound are Half lobsters. Those people who have small appetites will be glad with chicken types to be served with another main course. However, for those who prefer to have a hearty meal, they’ll be happier with Quarter or Half lobsters.

Shellfish and clams also have several different types. But before you get confused on which types to choose, any shellfish will actually go well with lobster bisque. And if you really want the best authentic clambake, then have the New England steamer clams instead. These so-called steamers are large and have really soft shells. One pound of clams is recommended for each individual.

Corn on the cob and red bliss potatoes add to the delicious distinct flavor and yummy presentation of authentic New England clambakes that would be surely hard to resist. Both can be boiled, steamed or even grilled just like you do with the lobsters and steamers.

New England Clambakes used to be prepared by Native Americans in a large fire of hot stones in a pit dug along the coast. But since this method may seem to be quite complicated, you can just opt for the simpler and much better one - cooking with the use of pots or ovens. Steaming is considered the recommended way to cook lobsters, so all you need is a large pot with a steamer basket and some salt.

Next, pour 1 and inches of water to the large pot and for every quart of water, add an approximate 1 tablespoon of salt. Bring it to a boil and then put the lobsters and steamer basket inside the pot.

One-pounder lobsters should be cooked for approximately 12 minutes. A pound and a half lobsters should be cooked for around 15 minutes. Check the pot periodically to ensure that all the water has not boiled off and add more water while the lobsters are cooking if needed. Remove the lobsters and pull off one of their small legs. Break open the leg and test the meat to ensure that it is already cooked.

Adding shrimp, mussels and clam chowder will also make your clambake a delightful feast. Fresh vegetables will also enhance your presentation with a more healthy look. Your lovely lobster clambake is now all set to be enjoyed by your party guests.
