The Dog Stroller

Monday, November 12th, 2007

Dog Strollers are one my favorite things! I purchased one this year, feeling a bit foolish but now I always take the stroller with me when I take my dog to street fairs or other events where there will be a lot of people and activity. I find that she relaxes within the stroller and is quite happy in her safe area. I also found that when it is hot, the stroller is cooler because the covered area is in the shade. The stroller is a crate on wheels, giving that same safe place effect. Find out more about this and other pet information at Family Pet Zone.

Golden Retrievers | Gear For Man’s Best Friend

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

A chest harness isn’t mandatory, but using one can make it easier on the owner and his Golden Retriever. Some individuals are more inclined to pull than others, some are more easily distracted. A chest harness will make it easier to control the dog and avoids stress on its throat.

Golden Retriever | Feeding You Four Legged Friend

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

Even those opposed to the more popular, commercial dog foods agree on some basics about Golden Retriever diet. As canines, they are by nature carnivores. That means they have evolved to eat meat. All dogs, though (and Golden Retrievers in particular), have the capacity to digest some grains and vegetables.

Different Breeds Of Dogs

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

To ensure a good match between your pet and your family or personal lifestyle, there are many factors that you should consider when making a choice between the different dog breeds. These include: How much free time do you have available? Any dog will require a large amount of attention for feeding, exercise, grooming and play. How much space do you have available? A large dog can be very energetic and require a large amount of space for exercise.

The different breeds of dogs have different physical and personality traits, and different needs and desires. Larger dogs may prefer to be taken for strenuous runs rather than leisurely walks. Dogs with long fur will usually require more grooming than dogs with short fur.

Dog Whisperer | Considering Care Of A Chow Chow Puppy

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

If you have considered the care of a chow chow puppy as an option for having a pet, it’s little surprise. These dogs are quite unique, with tongues that are blue-black and rounded ears. These dogs come in two varieties, a short-haired version, and one with longer hair, which looks as if it has a mane, giving it a very lion-like appearance. People who consider the care of a chow chow puppy often see this dog as a living teddy bear. However, these dogs are quite different from living teddy bears, and it helps to know what it’s like to care for a chow chow puppy before getting one.

Training your puppy - start by winning his respect and confidence

Friday, September 28th, 2007

The basis of training any animal is winning its trust, confidence and respect. True training cannot begin until the animal has accepted you as its leader, respects you and entrusted you with his or her confidence.

The mistake many puppy owners make is mistaking love and affection for respect and confidence. While it is certainly important to love your new puppy, it is also very important that the puppy respect you and see you as his leader. Dogs are naturally pack animals, and every dog looks to the lead dog for advice and direction. Making yourself the pack leader is vital to the success of training any dog.

Is The Pomeranian The Perfect Pet For You?

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

The Pomeranian is a perfect dog if you want a small dog that doesn’t need a lot of exercise. Weighing in at less than 7 pounds, some can be very tiny and my little Pom was only 3 pounds! They are quite smart and make great companions.

The Pomeranian has a fox like face and always appears to be smiling. They have a double coat with a long silky outer coat and a wolly undercoat - very furry dogs! They need to be brushed quite a bit as the undercoat can get matted very easily and the mats are impossible to brush out so you have to cut them out!

Despite the time you need to spend brushing your Pomeranian, they are well worth the effort!

Not sure if a Pomeranian is perfect for you? Check out some Pomeranian pictures.

The Dalmatian

Monday, September 10th, 2007

The Dalmatian is an ancient breed which goes at least as far back as ancient Egypt. A member of the AKC Non Sporting Group, this breed is usually around 55 pounds in weight and is recognized by it’s distinctive spotted coat. Sometimes Dalmatians can be outgoing, but others can be shy. It is an intelligent breed but can be willful and must be firmly trained.

All Dalmatian puppies should be tested for deafness which afflicts about 10% of the breed. Although a short haired dog, it does shed profusely twice a year so brushing will be necessary at these times. The Dalmatian does not make a good apartment dog as they need lots of exercise.

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

Dogs are very curious animals and as omnivores and natural scavengers, can get into and eat just about anything. However, there are many toxic substances found in your home that could potentially kill your dog. The following is a list of ten common household substances that you should make sure to keep out of your dog’s reach.

Dog, Cats, and Other Garden Pests.

Sunday, July 8th, 2007

If we could garden without any interference from garden pests which attack plants, then indeed gardening would be a simple matter. But all the time we must watch out for these little foes little in size, but tremendous in the havoc they make.

The same way human illness may often be prevented by healthful conditions, garden pests may be kept away by strict garden cleanliness. Composting is not the problem in gardens, it the piles of waste garden material because this give a great breeding place for those pesky garden pests and not just insects.

I like to use worms on my fishing trips but I do leave worms in the garden and only take those worms that venture onto the lawns late at night. I leave the garden worms for their constant stirring up of the soil which helps in aerating the soil allowing it to keep more air and water for available for the roots.

Dog Agility Training Requires Time And Dedication

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Those planning to institute a regimen of dog agility training need to be prepared to donate a lot of time, effort and praise on teaching their dog the tricks of the agility trade. Dog agility training can be common among breeds as well as size as most agility contests are based on the animal’s size and relative ability based on past competitions, as opposed to breed. Teaching the dog to conquer an obstacle course neither it nor its handler has seen before, will take a lot of dedication for the real competitor to become part of the team.

The Alaskan Husky Is Bred For One Purpose Only

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

It’s a shame really. The sole purpose of the Alaskan Husky is to be a superior sled dog. If the dog fails in this regard, then most breeders will consider the animal as basically useless. That’s too bad, because on those occasions when a family does keep one as a pet, they find they own one of the friendliest breeds available. Actually it is not so much a breed as it is a mixed breed. In fact breeders try so many breed combinations that the look of the Alaskan Husky is extremely varied.

All About The Miniature Pinscher Dog Breed

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

The first thing most people think when they hear about a Miniature Pinscher is that it is simply a Miniature Doberman Pinscher. It is not. In fact the Min Pin is an older breed than the Doberman. It was originally bred to be a ratter, taking care of the rats that hung around barnyards in the early 19th century. Now the Miniature Pinscher is an ideal family pet. You’d be hard pressed to find a breed with more personality.

The Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog - A Rare Breed

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

If you’ve never heard of the Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog you are certainly not alone. This is a very rare dog breed. There may be less than 200 still in existance. The breed was originally a plantation watchdog in Southern Georgia. Much like the Pit Bulldog, it will guard his home and family to the death. But unless provoked, these dogs are very relaxed and friendly.

The Different Types of Collars Used as Dog Training Aids

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

This brief article will discuss the different types of dog collars used today as training aids, and will discuss the benefits of each.

The Plain Collar

The plain everyday collar is the simplest collar to start with. These types of buckled collars, however, are quite useless for dog training aids because they are mainly for identification as these collars are used to hold identification information. To use it for a training aid would be futile because a dog can easily slip out of this collar.

Martingale Collars

These types of collars are good dog training aids because the Martingale collar is a type of choke collar but with limits.

Leadership Is Needed In Dog Behavior Training

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

For your dog behavior training to work properly, your family must be like a well organized team. Dogs are instinctively pack animals, and your family is his pack. This pack must operate like a well organized sports team. There must be a leader, and everyone on this team must understand and play his own role. This is especially true for your pet. He must not only understand his role, but know that the team leader and other members on the team are looking out for his best interests. In that way he will be a secure and happy team member.

But you need to know how to make it happen.

The Benefits Of Personally Potty Training A Dog

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

Sure you can hire a professional to do it, but there are so many reasons why you should be the one potty training your dog. Do this right, and the job will get done quicker and more effectively than paying someone to do it for you. Do it wrong however and your dog will become more of a source of frustration than of joy and love. The good news is that dogs are great learners, and if you can be consistent and persistent then the job is not that difficult.
