Solar Power Garden Light

Friday, February 26th, 2010

It is becoming more and more common to see all sorts of energy efficient devices in all walks of life. A perfect example is that, today, you can find solar powered devices in even the most ordinary of appliances. A perfect example is solar powered garden lights.

Typically, a solar power garden light can be installed simply by placing them into the desired area, insuring they have adequate exposure to the sun during the day. After dark, the automatic on feature of the solar power garden light will keep it lit throughout the night. Depending on the quality of the battery being used in the light, it may even last two or more nights without sunlight. Units with a timer can also help preserve battery life foe extended periods by not having them lighted during unneeded hours.

Fall Lawn Care

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Dethatching your lawn, raking the dead leaves and debris, checking the pH levels of your soil – these are all things you should do as part of fall lawn care or preparing your lawn for the Fall.

In addition, temperatures during the fall months are not quite as hot as in the summer but you still need to pay attention to providing adequate amounts of water to your lawn, and this is something that most people tend to overlook. Just like the human body, lawns need water in the cool weather of fall the same as they do in the spring.

You also need to prepare your lawn equipment for their Fall and Winter hiatus. This means things like emptying the gas from your lawn mower, putting your rake and lawn tools in the shed, and so on.

Squirrel Proof Feeders

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Squirrels can learn how to empty a bird feeder as quickly as you can keep it filled. At first the feeder might be amusing–but after some time, the expense of continually filling the feeder can add up. Many veterans of the battle against squirrels warn us that if those pesky critters want to get to the seeds in the feeder bad enough, nothing will stop them. But those that watch those little birds feed in the backyard say that there are ways to squirrel proof feeders.

As you think about were to put the bird feeder remember that squirrels can jump from 7 to 10 feet from one object to another. They can jump vertically up to 5 to 6 feet. From above, squirrels can also drop 9 to 10 feet to the bird feeders.

If the first location you put the feeder in does not “squirrel proof”, keep trying.

Here are some tips that will help to battle those pesky squirrels:

* Install a Baffle. The baffle is placed between the feeder and the squirrel. They can be found in platter-shaped or conical shaped objects. The purpose of these baffles is to prevent the squirrel from getting to the feeder. There are squirrel proof bird feeders that come with a dome-style roof that is designed to act as the baffle.
* If possible, place the bird feeder in a territory were there are no pesky squirrels. Try to place bird feeders away from tree limbs. String a line or a rope between the trunk of two trees or between two poles and hang the bird feeder in the middle of the line or rope. Place some grease on the line or rope to add another layer of protection.
* Mounting the bird feeders on a pole can. Make sure the pole is smooth like PVC, This should prevent the squirrels from climbing up the ploe. If the squirrel proof feeder comes with a pole you could put the pole through a piece of PVC for the smooth surface. You might try adding some cooking spray to the pole ….the squirrels will slide right down and squirrels will not be harmed.
* You could design and build a special area in your yard that will divert those pesky squirrels away from your bird feeders.

Pavestone(s) Installation

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Some people seem to think performing a pavestone installation is a simple process, that’s why some home owners take on the installations themselves. Here’s a kind of funny and might I add true story. We had a customer call in about a year and a half ago looking for a pavestones quote. He seemed very eager to expedite the process, so I went out to his house that afternoon. It was in a condominium complex that had front patio’s (approximately 10’ x 20’). As soon as set sight on his patio I was wandering what had happened there. The existing patio was torn out with just large mounds of dirt spread around. When I knocked on the door , a young man with a shiny new leg cast and crutches answered. When I asked what he did to his leg, he simply pointed to the dirt mounds in his patio and said “that happened”. He was performing the demolition on his patio, preparing to do the installation himself, and in the middle of it, he happen to slip and break his leg.
The point of that story is that installing pavestone is not only an art, but it is extremely laborious. A proper pavestone installation (at least in southern California) requires a sub-base preparation of a minimum of 4 inches compacted Class II road base (or more depending on what the existing soil is like) and an inch of washed masonry sand. Residential paving stones are 60mm thick – so you have a total excavation depth of 7.5 inches, minimum. An average 1,100 square foot pavestone installation would require excavation of 26 cubic yards of existing concrete, dirt etc., which would take about 4 dump trucks. You would import 15 cubic yards of base and another 4 yards of sand. Is this still sounding like a weekend project to you?
Besides the physical demands of performing a pavestone installation, skill is also necessary. While it takes only modest skill to cut a stone or lay a basic pattern, it takes a skilled professional to create a flight of steps or banding that meanders through a driveway, patio or walkway. This is where hiring a company like Panjia, Inc. is useful. Like I said, depending on your expectations of how you want your pavestone installation to look like in the end or how long you want your pavers to hold up against traffic will determine if you should hire a professional installation company, or take on the task yourself. One thing is for certain, there are many unqualified contractors (some licensed and some unlicensed) that bid low and then deliver a poor installation. There is a reason every market has an average price range. It’s not because all of the companies got together and said let’s charge this amount. It’s because it costs and certain amount to do the job and then a certain amount to pay for other business expenses (overhead). Depending on the overhead you will see some slight variances in price. When you see a 30 – 40% difference in price something is wrong. You must make sure each company is bidding the same pavestone, and the same installation process with the same base / sand materials. This often explains dramatic differences in price.

Buy Synthetic Grass and Save 60% off your water bill!

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

The main environmental focus for the past decade has been CO2 emissions, yet for many around the world a lack of clean water, water shortages and poor sanitation is a more pressing issue. Worldwide it is estimated that approximately 1.2 billion people lack access to freshwater, which equates to one sixth of the world’s population. By 2050 this figure will have risen to 2 billion.

With the World Health Organization estimating that 80% of illnesses and deaths in developing countries are caused by unsanitary water or lack of water, and the US Government estimating that at least 36 states will experience water shortages in the next 3-6 years, the issue is truly a global one and not one for just the developing world.

How will the water industry address one of the most pressing human crises of the 21st century?

The emerging environmental technologies sector is currently worth $600 billion worldwide and the water industry accounting for more than 50% of this business. According to the World Water Council the use of renewable water resources has grown six-fold since 1900 and is expected to double again by 2050, therefore recycling wastewater to create fresh water supplies will be vital globally, especially for developing and third-world countries.

Artificial grass is one way to do your part. In the United States it is estimated that 60% of all water usage is for landscape irrigation. 60%! It is a combination of millions of households doing their part to help combat our water shortage. Imagine – 36 states with expected water shortages in the next 3 to 6 years!

Backyard Landscaping For The Creative Do-it-Yourselfer

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

There is something about the attraction of getting into backyard landscaping; for those who have a degree of practice rolling up their sleeves and getting work done themselves, there is nothing quite like the challenge of shaping the great outdoors even if it’s only just out back there. For people who find a good role model in Jessica Simpson constantly saying things like, “Should we find someone to hang that picture?” there’s nothing quite as fearsome as actually getting down and dealing with plants, fertilizer and topsoil. This article is basically for people who love to get things done themselves; but if you want creative control over the way your backyard landscaping project turns out without too much reality getting in the way, you could always draw out the plans yourself, and just get help with the actual implementation.

The Joy Of Planting Trees

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

There have always been things that define our childhoods. For me, one of those things were trees. I lived in a rural area, and spent much of my off school time running around with my friends. What was great about where we lived was that there were plenty of neighbors, but we had a sprawling forest behind us. We lived at the base of a mountain, and felt very safe in that area. To this day, those memories always make me want to go about planting trees so there are always plenty of them around. The trees I remember were all around me. I always loved them because they were a form of entertainment all in their own. We didn’t have to have a lot to be lost in play all day long. We could climb them, build forts near them, and pick up the nuts some of them dropped on the ground.

Green Solutions for Landscaping

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

It goes without saying that the modern age represents the height of ecological and environmental concern when compared with any other period throughout history. The concepts of global warming and greenhouse gasses and carbon emissions have served to create an awareness of humanity’s footprint on the world and how it’s decisions have a direct impact on global health. While the implications of this awareness can be quite scary and lead to doomsday prophecies, the fact that humanity’s collective eyes have been opened to a fundamental reality has prompted many positive changes.

One such change is the introduction of environmentally friendly products. One such product is artificial grass. The idea of artificial grass has been slowly adopted as an acceptable substitute for natural sod. But the process of adoption has taken decades. This was partially due to the quality and price of the available artificial grass product, and partially due to the basic tenet that that which is natural is preferable to that which is not.

Several factors have contributed to the increased adoption and acceptance rates of artificial grass. One factor is the price. People looking to buy artificial grass typically ask the question: “How long before there is a positive return on the initial investment?” Well, the answer to that question varies dependent upon (a) maintenance and (b) water costs. For individual who retain the services of a gardener and pay to have the lawn mowed, the initial investment if recouped more quickly than for those who do not. Similarly, individuals who reside in drier climates and are forced to regularly water their lawns are going to recoup the investment more quickly than people who do not.

Given the variables associated with an artificial grass cost-benefit analysis, it is important to explore other factors that could be considered benefits to purchasing and installing artificial grass. Environmental concerns fit the bill. Consider that individuals who buy artificial grass no longer require pesticides or other chemicals that can be harmful to the environment. Apart from the cost saving considerations, there is a shortage of water in many regions (and soon, universally) that is offset by installing artificial grass. It is also the case that most lawn mowers are gas-powered, which means that the act of mowing the lawn is contributing carbon emissions to a degree that is surprising: using the average petrol-fueled lawn mower for one-hour contributes just as much pollution as a 100 mile car trip, according to the EPA.

Think about the environment when considering landscaping options and buy artificial grass. The quality has improved, the cost has decreased and the ecological habitat called Earth will be grateful.

Fireworks for Bonfire Night

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

America has ‘Independence Day’ fireworks while we in the United Kingdom celebrate the Gunpowder Plot with just as much relish. Also known as Bonfire Night here in the UK, November 5th commemorates the attempted blowing up of Parliament by Catholic conspirators on November 5th 1605. Thankfully the plot was discovered in time and all the conspirators were executed. Their ringleader was Guy Fawkes and he is immortalised as an effigy or ‘Guy’ on top of the bonfire that is traditionally burned as part of the annual remembrance.

If you live in the UK particularly in Lancashire you can get the best fireworks in Wigan from Billinge Garden Centre. For more information call into the website at Garden Centres Wigan.

Swimming Pool Cleaners

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Another type of automatic swimming pool cleaner is the skimmer system. With automatic swimming pool cleaners, you connect the cleaning apparatus to the skimmer. The water is continuously sucked through the skimmer with a vacuum hose as the vacuum head trolls the bottom of the swimming pool.

The above swimming pool cleaner are physical in nature. But many chemical cleaners are around as well. The big difference is that chemical cleaners, if not used correctly, can actually cause injuries to your health. Many of the chemical swimming pool cleaners are poisonous – either to the touch or when breathed through the air.

Installation Considerations when you Buy Artificial Grass

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

The goal of every installation after buying artificial grass is to achieve a long-lasting, functional, and natural looking landscape. Always consider what will be necessary to prepare the area before an artificial lawn installation can begin.

Preparation can include removing sod, soil, problem concrete, asphalt or other existing materials. Final grade should always be taken into consideration as well as use and accessibility to the site prior to starting your artificial grass installation.

Most artificial grass backings contain drain holes to allow water to percolate through into the ground. Gravity helps with drainage, and eliminates the need for unsightly drain heads on the surface of the turf. Some artificial grass does not included drain holes, and thus, percolates horizontally (examples would include some types of putting green products). During residential construction, homes are developed to have roof-line and ground water run-off to a daylight rain head where watershed will join with other run-off volume. If using this type of turf, the installation must allow for watershed above the artificial grass materials. Also, the subgrade needs to slope appropriately and contour toward the drain heads. Be sure to check with the local cities for codes and restrictions.

The use of crushed or rounded rock layers helps to deter underground pests, including worms, ants, burrowing insects rodents and evasive root systems from propagating and creating sub-surface structure concerns in the future.

Many residential grade weed barrier fabrics do not have the vertical and/or horizontal strength to stand up to the demands of permanent construction projects, UV, high traffic and extreme weather conditions. Be sure to use a high quality fabric in your installations. 4-6 oz is a minimum recommendation.

When buying your artificial grass for installation on top of concrete or asphalt it is recommended that you install a turf padding to help create a more natural feel and cushion as well as to lesson potential joint impact injuries. In this case proper infill is very important. You can considers a variety of subgrade paddings.

When you plan to buy your artificial grass for installation where sod or soil currently exists it is recommended that you first excavate down to 3 inches below finished grade. Add a durable and porous synthetic fabric for weed prevention then add your base layer (decomposed granite, class II roadbase, or equivalent) – decomposed granite, or DG is preferred for installations requiring a very smooth surface such as a putting green – class II roadbase is preferred for areas requiring superior compaction. Compact your subbase in no more than 3″ or 4″ lifts – to achieve a firm subgrade. A good rule of thumb is 1 ton of subbase for every 66 Sq Ft of 3″ of base/DG. Finally, add the artificial grass and the appropriate artificial grass infill.

If the final grade of your artificial grass installation needs to be level with existing elements such as walkways, driveways or patios – be sure to allow adequate excavation and estimation of base materials to raise the base to .5″ to 1″ below the final grade of the hardscape element.

If you are buying artificial grass for installation on a crowned lawn – be sure to bring in additional subbase materials and shape the base appropriately during compaction. The hard-edge should still be set after compaction to .5″ to 1″ below your desired finished grade. To provide for additional water run-off where necessary, consider inserting a small channel of drainage rock (a French drain) prior to the addition of base material. When combined with the proper soil stabilizing fabrics, a French drain will allow run-off to fall below the surface and channel without the risk of erosion.

When buying artificial grass for installation between concrete edgings or in-between flagstones and concrete slabs allow for additional excavation to support water run-off. Several layers of mixed base material may be needed and consider additional drain pipes, catch basins, connectors and drain rock.

Delight your Green Thumb with a Greenhouse Window

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

A greenhouse window attached on the south or east side of your house makes the best use of natural sunlight, assuming you live in the northern hemisphere. However, the land shape and areas surrounding your house could have an impact, so you might want to assess the morning and afternoon sunlight of the window you are interested in transforming into a greenhouse window. If the window you have in mind is not ideal in terms of natural sunlight, you may need to consider the use of fluorescent lights. That somewhat defeats the purpose of a greenhouse window, yet can be beneficial on rainy days. Regardless, you will be able to add more light and space to your room with a greenhouse window, enjoy fresh herbs with your meals, and take in the incredible scents and beauty of plants throughout the year.

Dealing with Garden Pests

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

I love my garden but can be destroyed by garden pests. One of the worst garden pests are chipmunks and squirrels. They eat all sorts of bulbs and seeds and particularly like newly planted seedlings. To get rid of squirrels and chipmunks try a light pepper spray on the affected plants. Another good option is a constant scare tactic, whether it’s a light or noise, these garden pests are easily scared aware. In my opinion the worst garden pests are rats, mice and voles. They are quite numerous and comfortable living near humans are small, quick and can eat pretty much any plant, flower or vegetable in your garden. To be honest i really hate them

Garden party ideas

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Now, there’s a more traditional sort of garden party idea to explore. So for example one of the sort is the ladie’s luncheon sort. This garden party idea deviates from the more rowdy sort of holiday get-down. Here, we’re talking petit-fours and a buffet style assortment of platters from which the ladies can pick and choose, delicately skewering their choices in bite size morsels amidst a cacophony of gossip and tall glasses of iced tea or margaritas. The ladie’s garden party differs from the family get-together, in that women like to gossip, giggle and have a good chat without the men’s interference. “OK, the grill’s ready. Bring out the burgers! Say, Joe, hand me a plate, would you?”

Renewable Energy

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

Hi-tech ways to capture enough sunlight per day every day to power everything in a home or business hasn’t been discovered yet. The current cost of solar panels can run into thousands of pounds, which would require the panels to produce electricity for years without maintenance in order to see a return on investment.

Many people use solar panels, which can be placed on a side of a roof to attract sunlight during the day to heat a small number of rooms and water. Solar panels can be purchased at a number of locations throughout the UK, as well as online. Panels do a great job of helping families and businesses to conserve energy. Hopefully, solar panels will become a part of daily life, in order to prevent the disappearance of natural resources and to maintain energy conservation. In the recent 2006 Budget announcement by Gorden Brown, millions of pounds have been allocated to helping homes and businesses take advantage of renewable energy and the benefits that it brings. This is a welcoming strategy by the government. More and more homes are also attaching mini-wind turbines to their homes to boost the electricity generated by solar panels, British Gas (Centrica) have recently been looking for volunteers to pilot this with.

Developing countries with sunny climates such as Africa are the perfect place to take advantage of this renewable energy especially in rural areas that are not connected to the national grid for electricity. There needs to be a commitment from the G8 and other government around the world in providing funds to achieve this.
