So you want to start a home based business? Hey That’s great. When I started my home based business I made a few mistakes. So I want to help anyone just starting out with their online business to avoid some of those time wasting mistakes.

1. First of all, before you start a home based business, you must know what it is you’ll be doing. You need to educate yourself about your “work at home” business. For example Internet Marketing , Placing classifieds , getting a WEB SITE ,Follow-ups ,etc.

2. SPAM What is SPAM? SPAM is unsolicited advertising. It is my opinion and many others who believe that SPAM is in the eye of the person being SPAMMED, not the person sending the SPAM. While you may not consider a message to be Spam, if the person receiving it does, it’s SPAM.

Lets look at some types of advertising that may be considered SPAM?

Bulk e-mailing (sending an e-mail advertisement to persons listed on an e-mail address lead
list).

Advertising with bulk e-mail services (companies who will send an e-mail advertisement to persons listed on an e-mail address lead list for you).

“Bounce back” e-mailing (sending an e-mail advertisement in reply to an e-mail advertisement
that was sent to you).

Advertising your Internet site to people that you don’t know, who didn’t specifically request the information.

These are only examples. Remember, SPAMMING includes ANY unsolicited advertising.

3. Posting ads on Forums: Like spamming , posting ads on forums message boards can get you banned. Forums are only to be used as sources of information about business opportunities.

4. Submitting to FFA’s. These are free for all sites that you can post your ads on. Take a little advice from me. Do not waste your time posting your ads on these sites,because your site will never get seen, because most FFA’s have such low rankings,it will give your site a low rank because you posted on them. Place your ads on classified ad sites instead.

5.Shouting. Other than using caps to emphasize a few words within an e-mail,or a web page, do not use all caps. Using all capital letters in a text or a correspondence is considered shouting, and shouting at people just causes them to leave.

So you are getting ready to start a home based Internet business, that’s great. Allow me to offer some tips on seting up your home office. These are just some suggestions that I found helpful when I started my home business.

1. Internet Access - This is an online business. You will need access to the Internet via computer. If possible make sure you have a high-speed internet connection to facilitate your business. Trust me dial up will only frustrate you when you are working online. If you don’t have a computer use a friends or take nightly trips to the library. Eventually however, you will want to invest in your own computer.
2. Phone Line -Make sure you have a phone line that only you answer. I suggest a lan line phone over a cell phone. It has a much better sound quality. If you have to leave a voicemail message, make sure that it sounds professional. You will also want to make sure you have unlimited long-distance for conference calls and following up with prospects. In addition, you may want to get 3 way calling for 3 way conference calls.
3. Office Space - When you are setting up your office in your home make sure that you have a specified area to work that is quiet where you won’t be distracted. In other words don’t set up your office in the TV room or next to the kids room. There will be times when you will be on the phone with potential prospects or important conference calls where you will need your full attention.
4. Schedule - Create a daily schedule for yourself of the hours you will dedicate to your business. This is very important. Stick to your schedule everyday, and make sure that you also schedule off hours to give your mind some downtime. Often times, entrepreneurs spend 8 hours doing something that should only take two, because there is no set schedule in place. Sticking to your schedule will increase your productivity and increase the amount of free time you have to enjoy life! Let your family know not to distract you when you’re “in the office” working.
5. Commitment - This probably the most important of the 5. Remember that you now own your own business. If you treat it like a business, you’ll get paid like a business. If you treat it like a hobby, you’ll pay for it like a hobby. If you take your business seriously and stay committed, so will your prospects, customers, or new team members.

There you have it. These simple tips may seem unimportant, but they will help to get your work space organized before you really get busy promoting your business.
