The Korum Ruckbag

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

The korum Tackle management system solves the ongoing poblem of all those assorted tackle boxes and trays that I have accumulated over time.

Now the Korum Ruckbag brings it all together in one simple manageable way.

At first sight the Korum RuckBag looks just like most other rucksacks. It is only when you start to use it that you realise the differences. The first obvious difference is the protective plate across what would normally be the back. This plate is designed to protect the Ruckbag, and your Fishing Tackle, from any damaging or wet fishing banks that you may drop it on. So why is the protection on what would normally be the back of the bag rather than on the base. Well, the RuckBag is designed to lay on its back rather than trying to stand upright as a conventional rucksack.

Squirrel Proof Feeders

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Squirrels can learn how to empty a bird feeder as quickly as you can keep it filled. At first the feeder might be amusing–but after some time, the expense of continually filling the feeder can add up. Many veterans of the battle against squirrels warn us that if those pesky critters want to get to the seeds in the feeder bad enough, nothing will stop them. But those that watch those little birds feed in the backyard say that there are ways to squirrel proof feeders.

As you think about were to put the bird feeder remember that squirrels can jump from 7 to 10 feet from one object to another. They can jump vertically up to 5 to 6 feet. From above, squirrels can also drop 9 to 10 feet to the bird feeders.

If the first location you put the feeder in does not “squirrel proof”, keep trying.

Here are some tips that will help to battle those pesky squirrels:

* Install a Baffle. The baffle is placed between the feeder and the squirrel. They can be found in platter-shaped or conical shaped objects. The purpose of these baffles is to prevent the squirrel from getting to the feeder. There are squirrel proof bird feeders that come with a dome-style roof that is designed to act as the baffle.
* If possible, place the bird feeder in a territory were there are no pesky squirrels. Try to place bird feeders away from tree limbs. String a line or a rope between the trunk of two trees or between two poles and hang the bird feeder in the middle of the line or rope. Place some grease on the line or rope to add another layer of protection.
* Mounting the bird feeders on a pole can. Make sure the pole is smooth like PVC, This should prevent the squirrels from climbing up the ploe. If the squirrel proof feeder comes with a pole you could put the pole through a piece of PVC for the smooth surface. You might try adding some cooking spray to the pole ….the squirrels will slide right down and squirrels will not be harmed.
* You could design and build a special area in your yard that will divert those pesky squirrels away from your bird feeders.

South Dakota Lake Maps and GPS Coordinates

Close by are Lake Thompson which is great fishing for walleyes and perch, Lake Henry, which is connect to Thompson when the water is high, for walleyes. Then there is also Whitewood lake which is really great for perch in the winter.

Bow hunting and bear hunting

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

The south dakota hunting season will be open in a few months so you should start making your plans now. Bow hunting for deer, that is.

I doubt that whitetail hunting has been this good in SD for a long time. Bring your hunting bows and give some of the whitetail, mule deer, antelope and elk hunting in South Dakota a try. You’ll be glad you did when you go home with a trophy. If you need some local deer hunting tips just ask in the hunting forum and the guys will be more than happy to help.

Bow hunting for deer has been good during this falls south dakota archery hunt. There are some nice pics of deer caught by camera in the hunting forum at Eastern South Dakota Hunting Forum. Whether your hunting horn or just hunting deer for the meat south dakota deer hunting is great. Deer and deer hunting is what it’s all about.

A little about bow hunting in general as this sport is getting more popular every year.

Bear hunting is becoming a controversial sport and this article is what I consider to be a kind of biased view of bear hunting. OTOH going to the local bakery and getting some of yesterdays donuts and pastries to bait bears with isn’t exactly a good image either. Personally I’d like to see that kind of bear baiting banned.

IMO if you’re going to hunt bears for the thrill of it then get all the thrills you can. Don’t sit 50-100 yards away and shoot some bear eating yesterdays donuts. Be a man, go into the bears domain and hunt for him there. Yeah, I know why a lot of people don’t do that but choose to shoot donut bears instead. Fear, plain and simple. They want to brag they killed a bear but they don’t want to be in danger doing it. Sheesh, man up, go hunt Mr. Bear where he lives and take your chances. Some days you eat the bear but one day the bear will eat you. That’s enough to make donut bear shooters out of most guys.

Fishing with GPS tips for a fishing newbie

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

In this day and age, you would be hard pressed to find a fishing boat without some sort of fish finding device. Fishing with GPS devices has become the latest in technology and water safety when it comes to fishing. They are used as a means of navigation and a way to mark your spot so that you can find it again in the future.

A GPS is a Global Positioning System that is made primarily for navigational purposes. They work off a network of satellites that are placed into orbit by the United States Government. The best part about a GPS system is that because they operate off satellite, they can be used in any weather conditions at any hour of the day.

The satellites will circle the earth twice during the day and transmit signal information to Earth. The signals can then be used to calculate the user’s exact location by implementing triangulation and pinpointing exact spots. Triangulation means that the GPS receiver must be locked into three spots before a calculation of longitude and latitude can be displayed.

If you are a newbie to the sport of fishing you need to know some tips and the basic rules of fishing. These newbie fishing tips are for you.

Fishing is an ancient practice. It dates back nearly 10,000 years. A number of various techniques and traditions have been used during fishing’s progression and newbies always wonder what’s going on. Modern technological developments have changed the way people fish, but many of the same rules, regulations, and social norms involving fishing remain.

Always practice good stewardship of our ponds, lakes rivers and streams when you are fishing. Remember that these waterways were around thousands of years before you and will remain long after you are gone. You can make a conscious decision to leave the areas in which people fish in better condition than when you found it. Take care of our lakes, rivers, and other waterways so that others will enjoy these areas also. Practicing certain behaviors will ensure that you are taking good care of the places where people fish.

African safaris and canned hunting

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

African safaris were made famous by Hemingway and the tradition continues to this day with African safari tours and even a lion safari can be had.

In one way or another, we have all had contact with the work or read about the life of the famous American writer Ernest Hemingway. We certainly don’t associate Hemingway with Africa hunting expeditions or wilderness.

Those who know a bit about the man have read of swashbuckling tales of drinking, bull fighting and hard living. We knew him as an avid sportsman who even penned one of his great books, The Sun Also Rises, around the annual running of the bulls in Spain.

In my opinion canned hunting isn’t ethical at all. Canned hunting is effectively trophy hunting a trapped animal. A canned hunt is a type of hunt that involves the hunter being promised a kill by a hunting agency or governing body.

The hunt usually takes place on the land that the host of the hunt, whether a hunting agency or private party, captures an animal and releases it in a generally enclosed area to be killed by the hunter. The enclosed area tends to be a small secure area so that the kill comes rather easily to the hunter.

This is one of the reasons I never went on a buffalo hunt out in Western South Dakota. It just doesn’t seem right, or sporting, to me to kill an animal that has no chance of escape. A hunt that relies on no skills at all isn’t a hunt, it’s just a kill and under those conditions a 5 year old could do it. Canned hunting is not a good thing.

Pavestone(s) Installation

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Some people seem to think performing a pavestone installation is a simple process, that’s why some home owners take on the installations themselves. Here’s a kind of funny and might I add true story. We had a customer call in about a year and a half ago looking for a pavestones quote. He seemed very eager to expedite the process, so I went out to his house that afternoon. It was in a condominium complex that had front patio’s (approximately 10’ x 20’). As soon as set sight on his patio I was wandering what had happened there. The existing patio was torn out with just large mounds of dirt spread around. When I knocked on the door , a young man with a shiny new leg cast and crutches answered. When I asked what he did to his leg, he simply pointed to the dirt mounds in his patio and said “that happened”. He was performing the demolition on his patio, preparing to do the installation himself, and in the middle of it, he happen to slip and break his leg.
The point of that story is that installing pavestone is not only an art, but it is extremely laborious. A proper pavestone installation (at least in southern California) requires a sub-base preparation of a minimum of 4 inches compacted Class II road base (or more depending on what the existing soil is like) and an inch of washed masonry sand. Residential paving stones are 60mm thick – so you have a total excavation depth of 7.5 inches, minimum. An average 1,100 square foot pavestone installation would require excavation of 26 cubic yards of existing concrete, dirt etc., which would take about 4 dump trucks. You would import 15 cubic yards of base and another 4 yards of sand. Is this still sounding like a weekend project to you?
Besides the physical demands of performing a pavestone installation, skill is also necessary. While it takes only modest skill to cut a stone or lay a basic pattern, it takes a skilled professional to create a flight of steps or banding that meanders through a driveway, patio or walkway. This is where hiring a company like Panjia, Inc. is useful. Like I said, depending on your expectations of how you want your pavestone installation to look like in the end or how long you want your pavers to hold up against traffic will determine if you should hire a professional installation company, or take on the task yourself. One thing is for certain, there are many unqualified contractors (some licensed and some unlicensed) that bid low and then deliver a poor installation. There is a reason every market has an average price range. It’s not because all of the companies got together and said let’s charge this amount. It’s because it costs and certain amount to do the job and then a certain amount to pay for other business expenses (overhead). Depending on the overhead you will see some slight variances in price. When you see a 30 – 40% difference in price something is wrong. You must make sure each company is bidding the same pavestone, and the same installation process with the same base / sand materials. This often explains dramatic differences in price.

Successful Turkey Hunting

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

One of the most popular ways to hunt turkeys is with a bow and arrow. It is a tradition in North America that relies on turkey calling and making the perfect shot. There are many agencies and organizations in place that either want to put a stop to turkey hunting or those that support the tradition of turkey hunting.

Like most warring factions, these two groups will stop at nothing to continue with their ideals. One can’t typically pick a side on the issue of hunting without knowing the issue itself. It is important, to get as much information on turkey hunting as possible to make an informed decision.

Turkey hunting is all about luring the birds out into the open and shooting them with a bow and arrow or with a shotgun. Few actually hunt turkeys with a rifle. Many people prefer the bow and arrow because it brings a great deal of tradition to the hunt.

You can hunt turkeys in the spring and in the fall but you need a permit or license if you are going to hunt turkeys. The spring and fall permits, however, are different. The spring permit allows you to hunt in a specific area during one of the 5-day turkey hunting periods but this varies by state.

In the fall, your permit will enable you to hunt any day during the season, as long as it is within the zone listed on the permit. Once again this does vary by local state turkey hunting laws so check the laws in your area.

Successful turkey hunting takes a lot of patience. Spring hunting involves less patience, as you make hen turkey sounds to try to get a gobbler to come to you. Turkeys don’t mate in the fall, though, so you will have to patiently engage in stand hunting. Stand hunting involves finding a spot and then waiting for the turkey to come to you.

Walleye fishing techniques and fishing tackle boxes

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Fishing tackle boxes are the next most important thing after your rod and reel. I’ve had boat tackle boxes and even some of the biggest tackle boxes. Surprisingly enough, your tackle boxes and accessories will become very personal items and you won’t want anyone rummaging thru your box of Fishing Lures and equipment.

You can’t be successful at most things unless you have the right equipment. When people think of fishing, they automatically think of rods, reels, and bait. However, you cannot underestimate the power of the fishing tackle box because it plays an huge part in the success of your fishing trips.

Many people covet their tackle boxes because they represent a lifetime of trial and error regarding what methods work for which fish. Each lure has a memory or even many memories attached to it.

This walleye fishing article is a guest article. It’s pretty good walleye info and it’s also obvious the person is from Minnesota. Lol, the walleye fishing lake that’s the walleye capital of Minnesota is Mille Lacs. I’ve fished it hundreds of times for walleyes. For many years it was known as the dead sea but after some radical new fishing rules walleye fishing is now really hot. Anyway, here’s the walleye article.

Fishing is a sport that most people have tried at least once in their lives. It seems that no matter where you live there is some type of fishing available; whether it is freshwater, deep sea, stream or pond. The walleye fishing techniques that are used vary greatly, as well as the equipment that is needed. The equipment and techniques depend upon the species that is being fished. My husband and I do a great deal of freshwater fishing. I love the action of fishing for pan fish and bass, but you cannot beat walleye fishing for the great tasting fillets.

Cannondale Mountain Bikes For Sale

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Do you love mountain biking? The bigger, rockier, and steeper the trail the better right? Although mountain biking is a popular competitive sport for adrenalin junkies like Lance Armstrong, it’s also a fun and potentially relaxing way to get out and enjoy the country side. Some people enjoy mountain biking on hiking trails, because it allows them to go farther and see more spectacular views and access more remote areas quickly and easily.

Here in Seattle, where I live, we have a lot of mountain bike enthusiasts. We have great access to mountains and in the summer some of the popular ski resorts turn on their ski lifts for bikers to take their mountain bikes to the top of the ski runs and then bike down. I guess it’s a good way to get more use out of your property when there’s no snow on the ground. If you enjoy tough mountain bikes, you might want to check out Cannondale mountain bikes. They are a popular brand and once you’ve tried one, you’ll understand why.

Hoyt Bows And Matthews Bows – Top Picks For Bow Hunters

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Hunting and archery can be a fun, challenging activity. Many hunters prefer hunting with bows because bow hunting is more challenging than hunting with a gun. You have to get closer to the deer or bird you are trying to kill, so you give the animal a more sporting chance to detect you and run away. Bow hunting will put your hunting skills to the test.

Some municipalities hire bow hunters to come into areas densely over-populated with deer (and people) and help thin out the herds. My husband doesn’t like deer, since one totaled his car while he was driving in NC (as a high school student) so anyone who helps get rid of deer is a friend of his!

If you want to check out some name brand bows, I suggest both hoyt bows and matthews bows. You can get great deals on these types of bows when you visit our new bow hunting online store.

Of course, you can’t neglect the right fishing bait or fly.

The implications of climate change on water resources and agriculture

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Climate change will affect the availability and use of water, and will amplify the competition for water resources. The climate-related impacts on hydrological systems are expected to increase, leading to high levels of uncertainty in water availability, and some regions will be far more affected than others. This will have a profound impact on agriculture, as approximately 60% of global freshwater is used for agriculture in South Africa.

At the same time, population growth and changing food consumption patterns are expected to put further strain on water resources, as a doubling of food production is expected in the next 40 years and global demand for meat is expected to increase by 50% between 2009 and 2025. This will intensify the challenges facing water management in many countries, particularly in developing countries where agriculture is often one of the largest sectors of national economies. Addressing the water challenge will be of fundamental importance in addressing challenges to agriculture in the context of climate change[1].

Buy Synthetic Grass and Save 60% off your water bill!

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

The main environmental focus for the past decade has been CO2 emissions, yet for many around the world a lack of clean water, water shortages and poor sanitation is a more pressing issue. Worldwide it is estimated that approximately 1.2 billion people lack access to freshwater, which equates to one sixth of the world’s population. By 2050 this figure will have risen to 2 billion.

With the World Health Organization estimating that 80% of illnesses and deaths in developing countries are caused by unsanitary water or lack of water, and the US Government estimating that at least 36 states will experience water shortages in the next 3-6 years, the issue is truly a global one and not one for just the developing world.

How will the water industry address one of the most pressing human crises of the 21st century?

The emerging environmental technologies sector is currently worth $600 billion worldwide and the water industry accounting for more than 50% of this business. According to the World Water Council the use of renewable water resources has grown six-fold since 1900 and is expected to double again by 2050, therefore recycling wastewater to create fresh water supplies will be vital globally, especially for developing and third-world countries.

Artificial grass is one way to do your part. In the United States it is estimated that 60% of all water usage is for landscape irrigation. 60%! It is a combination of millions of households doing their part to help combat our water shortage. Imagine – 36 states with expected water shortages in the next 3 to 6 years!

For information and to buy artificial grass – visit Purchase Green. For information on how to install an artificial lawn – visit Panjia Outdoors.

Green Solutions for Landscaping

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

It goes without saying that the modern age represents the height of ecological and environmental concern when compared with any other period throughout history. The concepts of global warming and greenhouse gasses and carbon emissions have served to create an awareness of humanity’s footprint on the world and how it’s decisions have a direct impact on global health. While the implications of this awareness can be quite scary and lead to doomsday prophecies, the fact that humanity’s collective eyes have been opened to a fundamental reality has prompted many positive changes.

One such change is the introduction of environmentally friendly products. One such product is artificial grass. The idea of artificial grass has been slowly adopted as an acceptable substitute for natural sod. But the process of adoption has taken decades. This was partially due to the quality and price of the available artificial grass product, and partially due to the basic tenet that that which is natural is preferable to that which is not.

Several factors have contributed to the increased adoption and acceptance rates of artificial grass. One factor is the price. People looking to buy artificial grass typically ask the question: “How long before there is a positive return on the initial investment?” Well, the answer to that question varies dependent upon (a) maintenance and (b) water costs. For individual who retain the services of a gardener and pay to have the lawn mowed, the initial investment if recouped more quickly than for those who do not. Similarly, individuals who reside in drier climates and are forced to regularly water their lawns are going to recoup the investment more quickly than people who do not.

Given the variables associated with an artificial grass cost-benefit analysis, it is important to explore other factors that could be considered benefits to purchasing and installing artificial grass. Environmental concerns fit the bill. Consider that individuals who buy artificial grass no longer require pesticides or other chemicals that can be harmful to the environment. Apart from the cost saving considerations, there is a shortage of water in many regions (and soon, universally) that is offset by installing artificial grass. It is also the case that most lawn mowers are gas-powered, which means that the act of mowing the lawn is contributing carbon emissions to a degree that is surprising: using the average petrol-fueled lawn mower for one-hour contributes just as much pollution as a 100 mile car trip, according to the EPA.

Think about the environment when considering landscaping options and buy artificial grass. The quality has improved, the cost has decreased and the ecological habitat called Earth will be grateful.

Fireworks for Bonfire Night

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

America has ‘Independence Day’ fireworks while we in the United Kingdom celebrate the Gunpowder Plot with just as much relish. Also known as Bonfire Night here in the UK, November 5th commemorates the attempted blowing up of Parliament by Catholic conspirators on November 5th 1605. Thankfully the plot was discovered in time and all the conspirators were executed. Their ringleader was Guy Fawkes and he is immortalised as an effigy or ‘Guy’ on top of the bonfire that is traditionally burned as part of the annual remembrance.

If you live in the UK particularly in Lancashire you can get the best fireworks in Wigan from Billinge Garden Centre. For more information call into the website at Garden Centres Wigan.

Hunting Areas in South Africa – Natal Midlands

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

This part of the country is often referred to as the Natal midlands and is one of the country’s up and coming hunting areas. With a wide variety of plainsgame and diversity of terrain, from the Drakensberg Mountains (South Africa’s highest mountain range) to spectacular canyons. This area now brags the latest South African record for Greater Kudu. Historically, the area is well remembered for the Anglo/Boer and Anglo/Zulu wars. These battlefields and sites are now a major tourist attraction to the region. Many of the decedents of these war veterans and pioneering families own the land where we are likely to hunt.
Inland of Durban, lying in an area that acts as something of a respite for all who go there, between Pietermaritzburg and the Drakensberg Mountains, is a beautiful region filled with stretches of farmland, charming little towns, a wonderful arts and crafts route and picturesque scenery bordering on the sublime, known as the Natal Midlands. The Midlands is rich with water – rivers, lakes, dams and waterfalls are abundant – and the landscape is endowed with green pastures, hills and forests, whilst the northern reaches of the Midlands are dominated by the foothills and mountains of the Drakensberg.
The KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, as the word suggests, is between the warm coast and the ragged Drakensberg mountains where snow falls in winter. The southern region is fertile, green and good farm country, the north tends to be thorny with grassy plains. The change of seasons is distinct: dry winters with snow occasionally falling towards the west; hot, moist summers with sporadic thundershowers; crisp and clear autumns; and blossoming springs. Top Ten US Beaches For Shell Collecting

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

The most frequently seen shells on Waikiki Beach are Cowrie shells, used by Hawaiians as an octopus lure. Cone shells are also commonly found on Waikiki Beach, particularly the Hebrew Cone, the Spiteful Cone and the Golden Yellow Cone. Swollen Bubble, Adam’s Bubble and Paper Bubble, which also can be spotted on Waikiki Beach, are commonly used for jewelry, thanks to its contrasting colorful look.

If Hawaii is indisputably among best destinations for shells in the world, then it is fair to say that Gulf beaches are the best shelling beaches in the continental United States. Apparently more than 400 species of shells can be found in the Gulf of Mexico. The region has a lot of beautiful islands and fantastic shores, but if you are looking for shells go to these top five Gulf beaches for shell collecting.
