Are You Thinking About Taking Art Courses? – Tips for Beginners

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

So you are just about to start your journey into the fascinating world of art and are thinking about taking a painting course? Like most new skills, it can be a little confusing at the beginning knowing exactly where and how to start, particularly if you don’t have someone to help guide you through the initial stages]. This article will hopefully provide you with a few tips and ideas to get you started.

Organizing Your Painting Studio
When you first start to learn to paint, you will more than likely not have the use of a professional art studio, however you should try and create a productive environment around you where you can concentrate on the job in hand and relax! Most importantly, try and find a space in your home that is free from noise and distraction. That’s not always easy I know! At least set up your art studio where you will not be constantly disturbed.

Lighting
If you can, find a room in your home that has some space and plenty of natural sunlight. A Conservatory is a great place to start, or a room that has lots of windows. If you can’t find any natural sunlight, you will have to use artificial light. There are special bulbs called “Full Spectrum”, that are made to emulate natural sunlight. They do a descent job in providing the correct lighting, but nothing compares to natural light.

Painting Brushes
As with paint colours, selecting your paint brush is purely a matter of personal choice. I have experimented over the years with numerous different brush types and mainly opt to use flats and filberts of various sizes. My paint brush selection mainly consists of No.2, No.5, and No.10 Filberts and No2, No5, and No10 Flats, which are all made from hog hair, which is very strong, flexible and great to use with oil paints.

Paint Palette

You will see every artist using one of these if you are not familiar with the term! The paint palette is basically the surface that you will use to layout and mix all your colors on. There are a variety of different palettes available. They can be made from plastic, glass or wood and come in a variety of sizes. I usually use a palette made from wood, however you will need to seal it first as the wood is porous. This is extremely easy to do. All you need is some mineral oil or linseed oil and then wipe the surface of your palette to coat the surface. Remove any excess oil and you’re ready to go!

de Young Museum, San Francisco

The oldest version of the most favorite museum in San Francisco was irreparably damaged by the earthquake of 1989. The newest incarnation of de Young beautifully incorporates a new museum’s striking façade to Golden Gate Park scenery. The façade was made of perforated copper and has already started to turn shades of green and brown to perfectly blend with its Golden Gate Park surroundings. The eclectic collection of the museum includes vast holdings of art and the arts from the Americas, Oceania and Africa, including works by American masters Sargent, Homer and O’Keeffe. The 144-foot tower provides stunning views of the Richmond and Sunset neighborhoods of San Francisco.

Paint By Number Sets

Monday, October 27th, 2008

I received my first paint by number set back in the late 1970’s. The hobby was still going strong back then and I was among the many eight year olds that became enchanted with this art form. Of course, this hobby eventually led to my interest in becoming a painter hobbyist to this day. When you are a child, new tasks seem to come easier to you especially in the realm of creativity. The paint by number kit is a wonderful way to introduce the craft to younger kids but adults can really benefit from the process of using one of these art kits. They help develop an understanding about how to use the various colors. One paint by number kit led to another and then another.

Paint The Town With An Airsoft Paintball Gun

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

An airsoft paintball gun can change the way you play survival games. Imagine creeping through the forest with nothing but your airsoft paintball gun and safety goggles to protect you from the vicious onslaught of the other side. You are ducking and weaving like a professional, half out of urgency because the last thing you need it to get pegged with a pellet and half out of expertise because you have the wide-eyed enthusiasm of a professional officer of paintball fame and glory on your side. You calmly duck behind a tree, ready and waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

Contemporary art could be your calling

An article about contemporary art

Okay, so here’s the deal. I took this contemporary art class in college and was exposed to some of the “brilliant artists” of our time. Now let me put this as simple as possible. One particular white canvas had a red dot in the center of it. Maybe the dot was not painted exactly in the center, but it was close enough. So how in God’s name is that brilliant art? I truly don’t get what makes that contemporary art piece special. I sure as heck wouldn’t pay someone money for that. I too can make a red dot in the center of a white canvas. You know what; I can even one-up that artist and paint two dots, or maybe even three. Would it be worth twice as much if I did? Go figure!
