How To Strengthen a Concrete Foundation?

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

In most cases, concrete foundation is reinforced with rebar. These are thick metal bars that run through the concrete to add strength. Most concrete is made with this inside, but where and why something is being used determines how much or if it is needed at all.

Concrete foundation alone, without the rebar, will not be strong enough to stand the test of time. Even foundations built primarily with already made concrete blocks have the same type of reinforcement built right in to give the foundation the strength that it needs.

The Charm Of The General Store

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

I was recently in another small town about an hour from where I grew up, and was surprised to see that they had a general store. What was great was that they still had the penny candy. Everyone with me got some, and we all marveled that such deals still existed. They also had all of the other things that you would associate with a general store, including a big wheel of cheese from which people could buy a chunk, local crafts for sale, and dusty fishing equipment sitting on a shelf in the back of the store.
If you can’t get to a general store near you, you can still find some of the same things they sell in other places.

This is no simple task but somehow, Hurley manages to break down complex concepts into learnable steps. It’s as if the author was able to make the human nervous system seem as simple as two cans connected by a string. A Concise Introduction to Logic is a magnificent piece of work that is accessible to most readers.

Drawing A Water Cycle Diagram

Monday, June 16th, 2008

When looking at a water cycle diagram, I usually start with the mountains, work my way down to the oceans, and head up to the clouds. Mountains, after all, are one of the most important steps in the water cycle diagram, and one of the ones most affected by global warming. You see, mountain glaciers are usually reservoirs of water. In the winter, increased snowfall adds to their supply. In the summer, melting causes a seasonal flood. In my water cycle diagrams, I am sure to note how this can be changed by excessive global warming. When all the water on top of the mountains has melted, there will be no seasonal flood, which will cause widespread drought.

Garden Planning And Miniature Fruit Trees

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

The fruit is more abundant every other year, but they did have apples the second year they planted the miniature fruit trees. To the north side of the deck they have created a small rock garden with perennials that do well in the shade. These lush green plants are a nice contrast to the color of the annuals in the pots on the deck. On the small south side area they have created a fire ring surrounded by two benches and two chairs. The over all effect is a welcoming space with plenty of seating. By breaking up the yard into zones they have utilized all the space they have, without making the space look cluttered. It gives the home a great deal of curb appeal…

Why Use A Cat Collar ?

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

As a cat owner of three, I can honestly say that my wife and I prefer collars on our cats. We keep tags on ours mainly for recognition purposes. Even though our pets stay indoors, you never know when they’ll attempt a quick slip out the front door, which happens all too often. The name and contact info are on the collar, just in case. If nothing else, this certainly offers the owner, piece of mind. A website that sells such collars is Gotags.com. Here you can find personalized cat collars of various styles and colors, which offer the cat’s name and phone number. In my opinion, this is essential when owning a pet. After all, while we enjoy playing with our pets, it is also necessary to protect them and keep them safe.

What is An Operating System or “OS” - A plain English explanation

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

What is an operating system? In this article I’m going to help you finally make sense of what for most people is one of the most confusing and least understood computer terms around: “operating system”, or “OS”.

This is actually a pretty easy idea to get when it’s explained right.

Now what is an operating system, or OS? First off, it’s is a type of software. To recap my explanation from my last newsletter article:

“Software” is all of the parts of the computer that you can’t really see or touch. Software would include things like Microsoft Word, your email program, Windows or the Mac OS, plus all of your personal files like letters, photos, music, and more.

One way to think about it is like this: hardware is like your brain, the physical part of your body, while software is like your mind or your thoughts — the non-physical part of yourself.

Software runs on hardware, just like your thoughts “run on” your brain…

Depending on which they meant, the answer is a little different…
