A basic comedo is the start of acne. The comedo is an enlarged hair follicle plugged with oil or bacteria under the surface, that grows into an inflamed lesion. When the skin produces oil, the bacteria grows within follicle. The skin becomes inflamed as your white blood cells fight. Two main types of acne determine acne care treatment.

Non-inflammatory acne. If the plugged follicle stays below the surface of the skin, it is called a closed comedo. This appears on the skin as small, bumps. This is called a whitehead. If the plug pushes through the surface of the skin, it is an open comedo. The dark appearance of the plug is due to the buildup of melanin. This condition is called a blackhead.

Inflammatory acne. Papule appears on the skin as a pink bump. The papules are tender and are an intermediary step between non-inflammatory and inflammatory lesions. Pustule are inflamed and contain visible pus, which appear red at the base with a white center. Pustules do not contain a large amount of bacteria. The inflammation is chemical irritation from sebum acids. Cyst are large pus-filled lesions deep within the skin. The cysts are painful. Cysts form as a result of a comedo spilling over the surrounding skin and immune system producing pus.

Acne conglobata is a rare serious inflammatory acne that develops on the back, butt, and chest. There may be severe bacterial infection associated necessitating acne care treatment.
