Thermal barcode printers, which work on the thermal transfer principle, can also be used to print on direct thermal labels without using a ribbon. In thermal transfer, the image is created by using heat to transfer wax or resin from the ribbon on to the label. Mobile water resistant thermal barcode printers are also available which can be quite handy in printing labels on the spot without having to run to the desk or work table each time. These printers work on batteries and are commonly used to print delivery receipts and invoices. Some printers can also be conveniently clipped onto belts.
