Implementation of Total Quality Management

The idea of implementing Total Quality Management can be very daunting. It is an extremely complex process. However, by following the points mentioned below, the “complex” can be eliminated in order for the implementation to become just another “process”

  • Fear must be eliminated – modern methods of training andsupervising need to be adopted.
  • By studying processes, facts can be gathered – standards based only on numbers and goals without methods need to be eliminated.
  • The realization must be reached that improvement of the systems need to be managed.
  • A long-term commitment concerning continuous improvement is crucial to any organization.
  • In order to manage the implementation of TQM, a systematic approach needs to be developed.
  • People need to be trained to understand the relationships regarding suppliers/customers.
  • The culture needs to be changed to right first time. Thus, a philosophy of zero defects/errors needs to be adopted.
  • Improvement of teamwork and communications – by managing the process, barriers can be eliminated between different departments.
  • Experts must be developed within the organization. Constant retraining and educating is necessary for this to happen.
  • The total cost of services/products needs to be considered – services/products must not be bought on price alone.

Thus, leaders should always consider the above mentioned points when implementation of Total Quality Management(TQM) is necessary in their respective organizations.
